Comparison and Evaluation of Laser Scanning and Photogrammetry and Their Combined Use for Digital Recording of Cultural Heritage

چکیده
Three-dimensional (3D) scanning and modeling of sites and artifacts of cultural heritage have increased remarkably in recent years. A wide variety of objects, e.g., small pieces of pottery, statues, buildings, and large areas of archaeological sites, have been scanned and modeled for such purposes as preservation, reconstruction, study, and museum exhibitions. Due to the range in size of the objects to be scanned and differences in the objectives for scanning and modeling, many approaches and options have been tested and used. As a result, it is clear that there is no single method that is applicable to recording every subject of cultural heritage and hence there is a strong demand for a hybrid method that exploits several technologies. Laser scanning can produce the dense 3D point-cloud data that is required to create high-resolution geometric models, although the quality of color information is sometimes lower than required. Another technology, digital photogrammetry, can produce high-resolution textures, if the original images have sufficient pixels, and 3D models. There is no doubt that these two technologies can supplement each other in creating high-quality 3D recordings and presentations. In this paper, we report a comparison and evaluation of laser scanning and photogrammetry and their combined use to digitally record cultural heritage objects from the point of view of producing accurate and expressive models and efficient data processing. The data used here was obtained from our experimental 3D measurement of Byzantine ruins on Gemiler Island, off the southwest coast of Turkey, in 2002. * Corresponding author.

Historical building conservation raises two important issues which are documentation and refurbishing. For the recording and documentation, we already have developed 3d laser scanner and such photogrammetry technology those represent a freeze object of virtual reality by digital documentation. متن کاملDigital Photogrammetry and Tls Data Fusion Applied to Cultural Heritage 3d Modeling
A great number of papers have been so far published about the comparison and the integration between terrestrial laser scanning and digital photogrammetry, as surveying and 3D modeling techniques. Though most of the works report about their application to Cultural Heritage, achieved results have shown that these two technologies can supplement each other in creating high-quality 3D recordings a...

Digitizing heritage monuments is a process of spatial data acquisition, geometry modelling, digital archiving and web-based representation. Moreover, there are several survey and digitizing techniques working and developing such as traditional manual methods, topographic methods, photogrammetric methods and scanning methods. The most popular on application and developing is 3D laser scanning te...
متن کاملPilbara rock art: laser scanning, photogrammetry and 3D photographic reconstruction as heritage management tools
Recording techniques such as laser scanning, photogrammetry and photographic reconstruction are not new to archaeology. However as technology evolves and becomes more readily available such methods are being more regularly employed within a cultural heritage management context, often by people with little experience in using these technologies for heritage applications. For most cultural herita...
متن کاملPhotogrammetry and Ground-based Laser Scanning: Assessment of Metric Accuracy of the 3D Model of Pozzoveggiani Church
Among the plenty of works so far presented on the use of laser scanning for cultural heritage survey, it can be noted that some geometric related issues have been not yet solved for. Most effort has been spent to achieve visually pleasant 3D models, mainly for VR applications, but only a few works addressed the metric and geometric accuracy of generated 3D models. According to such remark, in t...
